• 11 March 2009 – Demid Tishin, the Head of the translation
service provider ‘All Correct Language Solutions’, delivered
a lecture on translation quality metric for our 4th year
students. Thank you, Mr. Tishin!
• 2 March 2009 - GARY COOPER (senior
member of the editorial board of Cambridge University Press)
conducted a seminar “Words, Words, Words: Teaching and
Learning Vocabulary
in Chunks” for the first- and second-year students of our
department. Mr. Cooper’s presentation resulted in an animated
discussion of the principles of lexicography and latest
vocabulary changes in English. We acknowledge Mr. Cooper’s
contribution to motivating our students.
• 24 February 2009 - The annual scientific conference
of Samara State University researchers took place. 26 members
of our chair actively participated in the conference, presenting
their findings there.
• 26 January – 2 February 2009 - Marina Petrova (CPhil),
Olga Mekheda, and Anna Kuklina conducted a series of seminars
on the Unified State Exam in English for the teachers of
our department.
• 21-28 January 2009 - Alla Grinshtein and Inna Drabkina,
assistant professors, and some fifth-year students of our
department courtesy of International Market Institute (IMI)
in Samara participated in the workshop conducted by Prof.
Andrei Chuzhakin (MGLU), a well-known interpreter and author

April, 2008]The Volga region round of the All-Russian
Foreign Languages Olympiad among students took place in
Togliatti. Second and fourth year university students from
Samara, Ulianovsk, Saratov and Togliatti participated.
Our team consisting of Maria Ivanova (4th year), Yulia
Syryatova (3d year), Elena Tuzlayeva (4th year), Ekaterina
Tanyukhina (4th year), and Tatiana Lebakina (4th year)
won the team victory. In the individual contest Maria Ivanova
was the first, Yulia Syratova the second, and Elena Tuzlayeva
the third. Maria, Yulia, Elena, Ekaterina, Tatiana -YOU

Grinshtein (Samara State University). Prof. Antonina Kharkovskaya
(Samara State University) made an interesting multimedia
presentation on linguistic markers of Business English
communication as reflected in Macmillan editions. More
than 200 colleagues from Samara and Togliatti attended

Our
lecturers and instructors participated in the International
Scientific Conference "Language and Culture in Russia:
Current State and Evolution” organized by Samara State University.
The conference took place on 24 – 27 October. Linguists from
Russia and Germany took part in the conference.
On
22-24 September our assistant professors Alla Grinshtein
and Inna Drabkina participated in a seminar on translator
training conducted by Vadim V. Sdobnikov, a well-known theorist
of translation from the Linguistic University of Nizhny Novgorod.
Problems of professional training of translators and interpreters
as well as problems of translation assessment were touched
upon at the seminar. Vadim V.Sdobnikov also gave a master
class in translation techniques.

department. The lectures are part of the Longman Teacher

March, 2007] Samara teachers of English participated
in the meeting with Prof. Svetlana Ter-Minasova, Doctor
in Philology, the Dean of Foreign Languages Department
and Region Studies of the MOSCOW STATE UNIVERSITY. Svetlana
Ter-Minasova delivered several lectures on methods of teaching
English as a foreign language, cultural awareness and global
English, and presented a new teaching complex developed
in the MSU. Our professors Antonina Kharkovskaya and Elena
Kashina, associate professor Alla Grinshtein, assistant
professor Olga Mekheda, instructors Elina Panova, Olga
Dyumina, Olga Romodanova, Galina Orekhova, Galina Rogozhina
and Anna Pyzh attended the meeting. They were awarded certificates
of participation.

December
2005 – Prof. Antonina Kharkovskaya, our Department
Chairperson, was awarded a commemorative medal “100 years
of Russian Trade Unions”.
Lewis
Durren, M.A. in Linguistics, a graduate of the
University of Wales, Bangor, delivered a number of lectures
focusing on the problems of intercultural communication
and global English. Our students enjoyed the opportunity
of exchanging their opinions on speech behaviour of Russian
speakers with Mr.Durren. They warmly welcomed his shrewd
observations, most persuasive arguments and vivid illustrations.
On
the 28th of November Samara teachers of
English participated in the meeting with Dr. Elena Solovova,
Candidate in Pedagogy, the Department Chairperson of the
Chair of Teaching Foreign Languages of the MOSCOW STATE PEDAGOGICAL
UNIVERSITY. Elena Solovova presented her course-book “Guide-Interpreter”
and a new teaching complex for schools with a number of subjects
taught in English. Our professor Elena Kashina, associate
professor Alla Grinshtein, assistant professor Inna Drabkina
and our instructors Nadezhda Garber and Xenia Filatova, as
well as a number of senior students, attended the meeting.
On 7-18
November Vyacheslav Shevchenko participated in
a special programme of the Curriculum Resource Center (CRC)
in Central European University's (CEU), Budapest www.ceu.hu.
Mr. Shevchenko’s project ‘Curriculum development and design
(ESP for students of Sociology at the Samara State University)‘
won a grant funded by Open Society Institute's Higher Education
Support Program (OSI - HESP). While staying in CEU Mr.
Shevchenko attended classes conducted by Prof. P.Rajaram
and M.Szabo on curriculum design and development and worked
in the CEU library. In Budapest Mr. Shevchenko met colleagues
from Russia and many other countries, and he believes his
CEU experience to be very valuable.
It is the second grant won by our lecturers recently. The first one was won
by Natalia V. Ilichova in 2004. Ms Ilichova with her project “Communicative
Strategies Applied and Recommended in Business English Video Courses “Market
Leader: Alliance”, “Staying Ahead”, “Business Leader Briefings” participated
in the Samara Region contest of students’, post-graduate students’ and young
scientists’ projects and won it.
Our
lecturers and instructors participated in the 3rd International
Science-Practical Conference "Problems of Teaching Languages
and Linguistics" organized by Samara Academy of Humanities
(SAH). The conference took place on 14-15 November. Professor
Antonina Kharkovskaya chaired one of the sections, “Problems
of Text Linguistics”, where she, associate professor Inna
Drabkina, senior instructor Tatiana Gouralnik and instructors
Tatiana Iskina and Marina Mikhlik presented their papers
on nominative aspects of book titles, vocabulary of Internet
forums, lexicographic parameters in linguistic study of American
neologisms, abbreviations in lexicographic tradition and
paralinguistic markers in English ads respectively.
On
10 November 2005 Alla Grinshtein and Inna Drabkina,
assistant professors, and their students courtesy of American
Corner in Samara participated in the workshop conducted
by BEATA LOZINSKI, Senior English Language Fellow, US embassy
in Moscow. BEATA LOZINSKI taught a class in teaching writing

On
3-4 November Mario Rinvolucri, a well-known consultant
who also teaches language and does teacher training for
Pilgrims, Canterbury, England, U.K., conducted a seminar
in Samara dedicated to new approaches in EFL teaching.
Our professor Elena Kashina initiated the invitation of
Mr. Rinvolucri to Samara within the framework of her teacher
training programme. She and our senior students participated
actively in the workshop dealing with different learner
intellects and NLP in teaching English.
Our
chair is currently accepting papers for publishing in the
next international issue of collected papers under the title
of "Discourse Dynamics in Modern Germanic Languages”.

Victor
Votinov (professor, academician, the Moscow International
Pedagogical Academy) conducted a seminar for the teachers
of our department. He conducted a workshop on ‘sliding’,
applying interchangeable teaching modules in EFL teaching.

April, 2003] The 34th Annual SamGU Student Scientific Conference
is over. Let's look back at it and analyze its results. The
theses of the best papers (English Language Department only)

We
are happy to announce the names of the winners of the University
Olympiad (English) - 2003. [see Applicant
- E-2003]
Our
lecturers and instructors participated in the International
Science-Practical Conference "Language and Culture" organized
by Longman, Developing Education Centre of Samara and Moscow
City Pedagogical Institute. The conference took place on
11-12 March. Professor Antonina Kharkovskaya, associate professors
Elvirina Vassilyeva, Inna Drabkina, Svetlana Maksakova, Olesya
Klimanova and instructor Natalia Ilycheva presented their
papers on business etiquette markers, phonetic peculiarities
of substandard English as reflected in fiction, strategies
of request and refusal in business letters, teaching cultural
awareness, textbook discourse and approaches to teaching
Business English for Philology students, respectively. Associate
professor Elena Kashina chaired one of the sections where
a discussion of the efficiency of British and American teaching
complexes in Russian classrooms took place.
It
is with the most sincere pleasure that we congratulate our
colleague Vyacheslav Shevchenko on successfully defending
his thesis. The CPhil (Ph.D.) thesis “The Cognitive Aspects
of the Multifunctional Lexical Items’ Use in the Sphere of
the English Business Communication” was defended on February,
26th, 2003.

February, 2003] members of our chair took part in the annual
scientific conference of Samara State University researchers.
All of our lecturers and instructors participated by presenting
their papers and discussing them.
2002
It
is with the most sincere pleasure that we congratulate our
colleague Olesya Klimanova on successfully defending her
CPhil (Ph.D) thesis “Wording of Tasks in Authentic English
Textbooks for EFL Students” and on getting the academic title
of Candidate in Philology.
T.
Gouralnik, senior instructor of English Language Department,
took a seminar on Humanities Computing Survey. The staff
of the Department took part in the seminar. T. Gouralnik's
main focus of attention was survey of how computer software
packages are used in humanities disciplines: for computer-based
instruction, for academic publishing, and as research tools.
She also picked up on some aspects of assessing the credibility
of a web-source and dealt with the rules of quoting a web-source
for academic publishing.
