Sociolinguistic approach to communication implies cultural understanding of address forms and patterns of their use. Address forms are an inseparable aspect of culture that reflects customs and values of a linguistic and social community. Address forms indicate hierarchial relationships among the speakers, express social identity, and help communicate essential social information.
The address system is tied to the social organization of the speech act, which refers address forms to the social conventions. Address forms are relevant in this issue, promoting the establishment of contact between addresser and addressee in the sociocultural setting.
The following social criteria should be held in mind in the choice of an appropriate address form: age, solidarity or distance, situation/type of contact, status/rank, gender, form of communication.
The corpus of English address forms is rich and varied. It is quite obvious that nominative expressions (personal names, titles, kinship forms, occasional forms), interjections, pronouns, special expressions of politeness, imperatives, and special words important in attracting attention constitute a universal language of social relationship.
The English address system provides insight into the adequate interpretation of social relations and the contexts in which this or that form may be appropriate.
